5 Boro Bike Tour Tandem Trike: Fat’s Where It’s At!

new_tireThe new tire arrived today! I have to admit, I wasn’t prepared for the striking difference between the old tire and the new one, but I like it.

The original plan was to go for a 3 inch wide tire, but it seems there is a big price jump when you reach the 3 inch level so I opted for a 2.75 inch tire. The old tire is 2.25 inches wide, but width doesn’t tell the whole story.

The new Sava MC2 tire is more sturdy all around. It is rated to carry a load of 375 pounds – this is plenty of capacity for a tandem. The slick tread and grippy rubber compound will reduce rolling resistance while increasing traction. The firm sidewall will help with cornering stability. Finally, with all that air volume we shouldn’t even notice that the trike has no suspension. The long wheelbase combined with a fat tire should make for a limousine-like ride.  I’m looking forward to putting some miles on this setup.

Oh, and in case you’re keeping track, the Sava MC2 16X2.75 tire was $32.
